Next week starts the process of transitioning away from running the daily stand-ups and entrusting my team captains with more responsibility.
It's been an exciting and challenging experience to mentally prepare for this, so here are a couple of things I've learnt along the way.
1. Trusting Your Team to Take the Helm: As founders, we tend to wear multiple hats and be involved in every little detail. But here's the thing: we can't do it all forever. By assigning team captains to own two-week segments of daily stand-ups, you're taking a leap of faith in my team's capabilities. Trusting your team members to handle responsibilities fosters a sense of empowerment and allows you to focus on higher-level strategic initiatives.
2. Embracing the Bigger Picture: When we're knee-deep in the trenches, it's easy to lose sight of the bigger picture—the vision that sparked our startup journey. Transitioning away from the daily stand- ups gives you the space to reconnect with that vision. It allowed me to zoom out, assess our progress, and realign my efforts with the long-term goals of the company. Remembering why we started this journey in the first place keeps us motivated and ensures we're always moving in the right direction.
3. Learning to Let Go (and It's Okay!): As founders, we often struggle with relinquishing control. We think no one can do things as perfectly as we can. But here's the truth: growth requires letting go. By empowering team captains and giving them the freedom to make decisions, you'll see a newfound sense of ownership and commitment among team members. It's humbling to see others step up and excel in areas where you used to have a stronghold. Trust me, letting go is scary, but it's necessary for the success of your startup.
4. Staying Grounded in the Lessons Learned: While gradually transitioning away from daily stand-ups make sure to stay connected with the lessons learned on the ground. Regular communication with team captains becomes your lifeline. Their insights, challenges, and successes helps you gauge the pulse of the company. Never lose touch with the lessons your team teaches you—they're invaluable.
5. Nurturing Continuous Growth: As founders, we're lifelong learners. Transitioning away from daily stand-ups frees up time to focus on personal growth and development. Delving into industry trends, attended conferences, networked with fellow entrepreneurs, and seeking out mentors who had been in your shoes. Remember, our startup's success is closely tied to our own growth. By continuously learning, we become better leaders, better innovators, and better equipped to tackle any challenges that come our way.
So, feel free to let go, but ensure you setup guard rails before you do!
